Microsoft voted UK's best brand by British public

Microsoft is officially the UK's favourite brand. The BBC made the top 5. Apple just about made it into the top ten.

Apple's business model is not so different from that of Rolex, the luxury watch-maker which did make the top 5 -- selling very expensive, even over-priced, versions of an everyday item. Apple capitalises on continuing demand among many consumers for trendy, shiny consumer electronics products, items which clever marketing techniques have turned into status symbols. (An "iPod" is simply a branded MP3 player. I can buy an MP3 player for pocket change, but I've never needed to because there's always been one built into the mobile phone I get for free with my talk plan.)
